Thanks, and have fun shopping!

When you learn that you have diabetes or that you need to change your diabetic treatment plan you may feel frightened, frustrated and overwhelmed. These feelings are unnecessary because diabetes can be controlled.

The diabetic is an important part of their own healthcare team. The more you know and understand about diabetes the better you will be able to take care of yourself and stay healthy. Your doctor, diabetes educator, pharmacists, and dietitian should work with you to develop the best program for managing your diabetes.

A comprehensive diabetes management program should include:

developing and following a personal meal plan

taking medications as prescribed

monitoring blood glucose levels, recording them in a log book and bringing the log book to office visits

exercising

proper skin, foot and dental care

yearly eye exams

regular hemoglobin and kidney tests

having a healthcare provider available for questions or problems

The goal of treatment and management is to decrease the symptoms and to prevent short term complications such as hypoglycemia, hyperglycemia, and ketoacidosis.
