Diabetes, Nutrition, Meal Planning & You

The proper diet is a necessary part of diabetes treatment. Proper nutrition can help someone with diabetes reach and maintain a desirable weight, maintain normal blood glucose levels, and prevent heart and circulatory diseases.

There's no standard diet that works perfectly for everyone with diabetes. A doctor or nutritionist can recommend a diet that fits an individual's needs.

Today's Diabetes Nutrition Goals

Control blood glucose - 120 fasting, glycated hemoglobin <7%.
Control blood lipids (fats) - cholesterol <200, LDL<130, triglycerides <200.
Control blood pressure - <130/85. Get to or stay at a healthy weight.
Be physically active to help control weight and blood glucose.
Choose healthy foods.
Eat meals and snacks at regular times and in similar amounts.

Take These Steps to Plan Healthy Meals

Eat a variety of foods to meet vitamin and mineral needs.

Eat More:

Whole grains - whole wheat breads, crackers and cereals.
Dried peas and beans; pasta, brown rice, potatoes, corn or peas.
Monounsaturated fat - use olive, canola or peanut oil instead of butter or margarine.

Each Day, Eat At Least:

Two to three servings of fruits.
Two to three servings of vegetables.
Two servings of low- or non-fat milk or yogurt.

Eat Less:

Protein - meat, poultry and seafood. - Two 2-3 oz. servings per a day are appropriate.
Fat - common sources are margarine, mayonnaise, and salad dressing.
Saturated fat - the fat in red meat, whole milk dairy foods.
Sugars and sweets in moderation - one once or twice a week.
