Sitting a long time can cause problems like low back pain, weak stomach muscles, poor circulation, tight muscles and stiff joints. You should try to get up every hour to walk and stretch for awhile. When that is not possible, try these exercises that you can do while seated. Aim to do them once every hour. They only take a few minutes and will save you discomfort while giving you energy.

Seated Calf Raise -- Keeping the balls of your feet on the floor, raise your heels, pause, then release. Repeat five to ten times.

Seated Foot Raise -- Keeping your heels on the floor, raise the balls of your feet, pause, then release. Repeat five to ten times.

Leg Lift -- Grip the seat of your chair and raise one leg while you flex your foot. Hold for two seconds, then slowly move your leg outward, then back toward the center again. Repeat five times then switch legs.

Stomach Squeeze -- Keeping your lower back pressed against your seat, pull in your stomach muscles. Hold for three to five seconds, then release. Repeat five times.

Buttocks Squeeze -- Squeeze your buttocks muscles as tight as possible for three to five seconds, then release. Repeat five times.

Seat Walking -- Shift the weight from the right to the left side of your buttocks, rocking back and forth for 10 to 15 seconds.
