This is a list of warnings and contraindications for specific herbs. This information is designed as a quick reference convenience for research and educational purposes and does not constitute a complete listing of the warnings and contraindications of each botanical.

5-HTP

contraindicated with serotonin enhancing antidepressants, weight control drugs, or any other serotonin-modifying agent

Arginine

can stimulate viral replication

Bilberry

may cause hypoglycemia

Bromelain

increases the absorption of amoxicillin

acts as a blood thinner

Consult a physician before supplementing while on anticoagulants

Citrus Pectin

soluble fiber can interfere with the absorption of lovastatin

Coenzyme Q-10

if has congestive heart failure, do not stop taking suddenly; abrupt withdrawal may exacerbate symptoms

DHA

blood clotting times do decrease with supplementation but are still within normal range

Consult a physician before supplementing while on anticoagulants

Dong Quai

inhibits platelet aggregation

Consult a physician before supplementing while on anticoagulants

Echinacea

contraindicated in autoimmune illness like lupus, HIV, multiple sclerosis, tuberculosis

contraindicated if have daisy allergy

Garlic

inhibits platelet aggregation

increases fibrinolysis decreasing coagulation

Consult a physician before supplementing while on anticoagulants

Garlic is a reputed abortifacient and has been reported to affect the menstrual cycle. It is also reported to be uteroactive. However, there is no experimental or clinical documentation suggesting adverse effects of consuming garlic during pregnancy and lactation

Ginko

can decrease leg pain from walking (intermittent claudication) but only at higher than recommended doses, do not use for this indication

Ginseng, Panax

contraindicated in uncontrolled high blood pressure

Glucosamine

may increase cholesterol and/or triglycerides

Hawthorn

caution with ACE inhibitors, cardiac glycosides

Horse Chestnut

contraindicated with kidney or liver problems

Kava Kava Root Extract

contraindicated with alcohol, barbiturates, antidepressants, and antipsycotic drugs

Kelp

iodine (from kelp) can interfere with normal thyroid function

Ma Huang Extract

contraindicated with heart disease, high blood pressure, thyroid disease, diabetes, enlarged prostate

contraindicated with antidepressants, mono amine oxidase inhibitors (MAO inhibitors)

N-acetyl-L-cysteine

may increase urinary zinc excretion

Schisandra Fruit Extract

use caution with fever, acute infection, liver damage

St. Johns Wort

may decrease digoxin levels up to 33%

if at steady state on digoxin while taking St. Johns Wort do not abruptly discontinue, digoxin levels will increase

may decrease blood levels of indinavir (Crixivan); FDA advises not to use with protease inhibitors

Vitamin B-6

more than 200mg per day can damage sensory nerves

pregnant or lactating should not take more than 100mg per day

Vitamin D

contraindicated in sarcoidosis

contraindicated in hyperparathyroidism

Vitamin E

Inhibits platelet aggregation

Consult a physician before supplementing while on anticoagulants

White Willow Bark Extract

same contraindications and warning as aspirin

Yohimbine

contraindicated with kidney disease

contraindicated with peptic ulcer

hypertension and aggressive behavior may also occur

combined with foods high in tyramine (cheese, red wine, liver) can cause severe hypertension

Zinc

Inhibits copper absorption

copper intake should be increased if zinc supplementation continues for more than a few days
