    Medications fall into five classes:

      - Diuretics ("water pills")

      - Drugs that inhibit the sympathetic nervous system (further
broken down into alpha blockers, beta blockers, central alpha agonists, and peripheral
        adrenergic antagonists)

      - Calcium channel blockers

      - Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors

Tell your doctor about any problems or side effects. Minor
ones, such as headaches or upset stomach, are often transient. Your doctor can only help
you if you inform him or her of any problems. There are more than 100 medications for high
blood pressure; to find one that you can tolerate well may require trying several.

        | Make a list of things to discuss with your physician at each
visit, including questions and concerns about your treatment. Make a note of your blood
        pressure at each visit. |
        | See your doctor for routine checkups and to monitor your
        progress. |

    Important Reminders

        | If you smoke, quit. Smoking more than doubles the risk of
heart disease, and increases the risk of cancer and lung disease. Smoking may hinder the
effective treatment of your high blood pressure. |
        | Control your weight. |
        | Avoid sodium (salt). |
        | Drink alcohol only in moderation. |
        | Make physical activity part of your routine. |
