Diet and Nutrition
Proper diet and nutrition is very important in preventing or
controlling high blood pressure. Many foods can have a positive or negative affect on high
blood pressure as well as health in general. Some general guidelines to follow include:
| High fiber diet including whole grains, beans, fruit, and
vegetables. Oat fiber is the best source
|
| Onions and garlic contain compounds that lower blood pressure and
lower cholesterol
|
| Avoid saturated animal fats and hydrogenated and partially
hydrogenated fats and oils (margarine and many processed foods)
|
| Decrease salt intake. It causes fluid retention which makes the
heart work harder. Especially watch processed foods. Many "low fat" processed
foods have high sodium content to make up for loss of flavor from low fat content. Use
seasoning herbs in place of heavy salt to season foods. Also watch salt substitutes, many
are high in potassium which may affect some high blood pressure medications. Ask you
doctor or pharmacist.
|
| Decrease caffeine use
|
| Avoid high alcohol use. Very moderate amounts, no more than one
drink a day, may have some benefit but heavy consumption increases blood pressure
